Authorities tighten cybersecurity as investigation focuses on suspected external involvement

Vilnius, Lithuania: Lithuanian authorities are on high alert after a major data leak involving more than 600,000 entries from national registers, believed to have been carried out by a foreign actor.
The Lithuanian General Prosecutor’s Office announced that the leaked data primarily came from registers of real estate and legal entities. The information was accessed using login credentials belonging to institutions authorised to retrieve such data.
Adrijus Jusas, head of the state-owned Centre of Registers, resigned on Monday following the breach.
Authorities have implemented additional cybersecurity measures, including blocking the accounts of suspected users and restricting access by requiring credential updates, prosecutors said.
The prosecutor’s office stated that a foreign country is suspected of involvement, although it did not specify which nation.
Lithuania, with a population of 2.9 million, remains particularly vigilant.
Opposition politician Laurynas Kasčiūnas wrote on social media on Sunday that sensitive information, including the addresses of intelligence officers, military personnel, diplomats and politicians, may have been accessed, potentially enabling surveillance or pressure against those individuals.
