Kuwait said Wednesday it had suspended all operations at the Kuwait International Airport after an Iranian drone attack hit the airport, wounding a number of people.

Defense Ministry spokesperson Brig. Gen. Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi said that "a number of hostile drones” had targeted Kuwait International Airport’s passenger building, severely damaging the building and injuring "a number of individuals.”

"A number of hostile drones targeted today the passenger building (T1) at Kuwait International Airport as a result of the criminal Iranian aggression, which resulted in significant material damage to the building and injuries to a number of individuals, who received the necessary medical care," he said.

The attack caused "severe damage" to the ‌airport's Terminal 1 building, the report said, citing the ‌General Civil Aviation Authority.

The drone attack came after Iran and the United States traded missile strikes late Tuesday, with the U.S. military saying it had launched strikes on an Iranian military facility in retaliation for Iranian missiles fired at Kuwait and Bahrain.

General Civil Aviation Authority has activated the Emergency Plan at the Kuwait International Airport following the attack. The authority has announced suspension of all flights and their diversion to nearby airports until the completion of necessary procedures and confirmation of the airport's readiness to resume its operations, according to KUNA.

Technical teams have begun inspecting and assessing the damage inflicted on facilities and operational systems in preparation for their repair and rehabilitation, officials said.
